Spam Assassin: Spam Relief Built-In

Spam Assassin is a mail filter installed on a mail server used to identify spam. It checks for spam using a large number of pre-set rules that check the header, body, and sender of all e-mail messages sent to your domain mailbox The spam-identification tactics used include:
  • header analysis : spammers use a number of tricks to mask their identities, fool you into thinking they've sent a valid mail, or fool you into thinking you must have subscribed at some stage. SpamAssassin tries to spot these.
  • text analysis : again, spam mails often have a characteristic style (to put it politely), and some characteristic disclaimers and CYA text. SpamAssassin can spot these, too.
  • blacklists : SpamAssassin supports many useful existing blacklists, such as mail-abuse.org, ordb.org or others.
  • Razor : Vipul's Razor is a collaborative spam-tracking database, which works by taking a signature of spam messages. Since spam typically operates by sending an identical message to hundreds of people, Razor short-circuits this by allowing the first person to receive a spam to add it to the database -- at which point everyone else will automatically block it.

Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as spam for later filtering using the user's own mail user-agent application.

Features

  • Wide-spectrum : SpamAssassin uses a wide variety of local and network tests to identify spam signatures. This makes it harder for spammers to identify one aspect which they can craft their messages to work around.
  • Free software : it is distributed under the same terms and conditions as Perl itself.
  • Easy to extend : Rules, weights and user-visible text are stored in text configuration files as much as possible, which the user (or sysadmin) can edit to modify or add new rules.
  • Flexible : SpamAssassin encapsulates its logic in a well-designed, abstract API. As a result, it's not limited to the traditional local-delivery-to-spool case; using the Mail::SpamAssassin classes, it can be used in a wide variety of setups. This means that SpamAssassin support is available for a variety of mail systems -- traditional procmail, a Mail::Audit plugin, qmail , sendmail , Postfix , many others.
Web Mail: Anywhere Access.

You can read your online e-mail using NeoMail, Horde, or SquirrelMail. All of these popular web mail applications allow you to read your e-mail, save them, keep an address book, and perform all of the other basic e-mail functions that you are used to. The main difference between web mail and an offline e-mail applications, such as Eudora or Microsoft Outlook Express, is that all of these functions are performed online, rather than on your own computer, and offline applications generally provide more features.

Web mail is optional. You can still use your favorite offline e-mail applications, if you prefer. You can even use a combination of web mail applications and another tool - you can check your e-mail online, perhaps when you're at work, and download your e-mail to your computer when you get home. You can automatically configure Outlook Express , or manually configure other mail applications to read your e-mail offline.

Main functions:
  • Compose - Write a new e-mail message. There are several options available, such as using an address book to choose the recipient(s) of your e-mail, adding attachments, and choosing a signature.
  • Addresses - Stores e-mail addresses of contacts. Click on any e-mail address to create a new e-mail message to that person.
  • Folders - Organize your mail messages into different folders. You can have as many different folder as you want.
  • Options - Set a large number of options on how you use SquirrelMail. Please read the description of a setting carefully before applying it.
  • Search - Search for a particular e-mail message. You can search by any field in the e-mail and search through any folder.
  • Help - Displays the SquirrelMail online help. Please read this help when you have any questions or problems.

Security Layers:
APF (advanced firewall policy)
APF is a policy based iptables firewall system designed for ease of use and configuration. It employs a subset of features to satisfy the veteran Linux user and the novice alike. APF is developed and maintained by R-fx Networks
BFD (brute force detection)
BFD is a modular shell script for parsing applicable logs and checking for authentication failures. The reason behind BFD is very simple; the fact there is little to no authentication and brute force auditing programs in the linux community that work in conjunction with a firewall or real-time facility to place bans. BFD is developed and maintained by R-fx Networks
CHKROOTKIT
Chkrootkit is a powerful tool to scan your Linux server for trojans
Compilers
C and C++ compilers are disabled. Many canned exploits require a working c on the system.
Direct Root Login Disabled
This will force a hacker to have to guess 2 separate passwords to gain root access. What happens is you'll first need to login as your admin user in SSH, then switch to the super user with the su command to get root.
Masked Apache
Masking or anonymizing a Web server involves removing identifying details that intruders could use to detect your OS and Web server vendor and version
MOD Dosevasive
Mod Dosevasive maneuvers module for Apache to provide evasive action in the event of an HTTP DoS or DDoS attack or brute force attack. It is also designed to be a detection and network management tool, and can be easily configured to talk to ipchains, firewalls, routers, and etcetera. mod_dosevasive presently reports abuses via email and syslog facilities.
MOD Security
ModSecurity is an open source intrusion detection and prevention engine for web applications. It operates embedded into the web server, acting as a powerful umbrella - shielding applications from attacks.
RKHUNTER
Rkhunter is a very useful tool that is used to check for trojans, rootkits, and other security problems.
Secure /tmp
Harden temporary data paths (e.g: /tmp) enforce strict options that prevent the execution of compiled exploits
SHELL Fork Bomb Protection
Fork Bomb/Memory Hog protection will prevent users logged into a shell (ssh/telnet) from using up all the resources on the server and causing a crash.
Telnet Disabled SSH

Performance Enhanced:
Along with server hardening, Host2Wow Net Solutions doesn't stop there. We also give your server a bit of a performance quick with some well known modules.

MOD Throttle
This Apache module is intended to reduce the load on your server & bandwidth generated by popular virtual hosts, directories, locations, or users according to supported polices (see below) that decide when to delay or refuse requests. Also mod_throttle can track and throttle incoming connections by IP address or by authenticated remote user.

Zend Optimzier
The Zend Optimizer is a free application that runs the files encoded by the Zend Encoder and Zend SafeGuard Suite, while enhancing the running speed of PHP applications. Many scripts require that you have Zend Optimizer installed so you are able to run them on your server while decrypting and running them on the fly while increasing runtime performance.

Support Boundaries:
Found in Section 11 of our TOS (terms of service) Host2Wow, provides 24 x 7 technical support to our subscribers (except for few holidays and short company meetings when we close our center.) We limit our technical support to our area of expertise. The following is our guidelines when providing support: Host2Wow provides support related to your server or virtual site physical functioning. Host2Wow does not offer tech support for application specific issues such as cgi programming, html or any other such issue. Host2Wow does not provide technical support for YOUR customers. Lastly, the Help files in the program you are using may have the answer to your question so please do investigate these resources. It is recommended to use our knowledgebase first before submitting a support request. You will find most answers to common problems/questions there. Dedicated Server Support Not Provided:
  • modifications to the operating system and control panel
  • Programming of any kind on your website
  • Installation of 3rd party software
  • Third party software including but not limited to Fantastico, any other free scripts included with cPanel
  • SSL support is strictly limited to installing SSL sold to you by Host2Wow.
It does not include support on setting up your software to function with the SSL
  • Tutorials on modifying anything on the server. We do not provide you tutoring on how to operate the dedicated server.
There is online documentation and flash tutorials available for you if needed.
Any thing found to corrupt the Operating System (OS) will result in a $50 Operating System reinstall fee. There is an additional $50 per hour administration fee for any other services required after the Operating System reinstall. Administration fees rated in half hour increments.

Fedora

The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from open source software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year, with a public release schedule. The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in building Fedora Core and will invite and encourage more outside participation than in past releases.

Fedora Core is intended to be a logical upgrade path for previous users of Red Hat Linux whose needs are consistent with the objectives of the Fedora Project. It is a return to Red Hat's roots; 2-3 releases per year, and freely-available downloads that can be called by name even when media containing those bits are sold by third parties
